Automatic dishwasher detergent comes in two dominant formats — pods and tablets. They look similar, they're used the same way, but they're manufactured completely differently and perform differently depending on your machine, water and cycle.
What Are Dishwasher Pods?
Dishwasher pods are liquid or gel concentrate sealed in a dissolvable PVA film pouch. Multi-chamber pods separate incompatible ingredients — for example, enzymes in one chamber and bleach in another — so both stay active until the moment of use.
What Are Dishwasher Tablets?
Dishwasher tablets are compressed powder, sometimes with a gel layer or a separate rinse-aid layer pressed on top. They may be wrapped in dissolvable film or sold unwrapped.
Key Differences
Dissolution speed
Pods dissolve faster because liquid concentrate disperses immediately once the film opens. Tablets need time to break apart, which matters on short or eco cycles under 60 minutes. If you frequently use quick wash, pods are the safer choice.
Multi-function performance
Both formats offer "all-in-one" versions combining detergent, rinse aid, salt function, glass protection, stainless steel shine and odor control. Premium 12-in-1 tablets can pack more solid actives per gram than pods.
Cost per wash
Tablets are generally cheaper. Compressed powder is less expensive to produce than film-sealed liquid.
Hard water performance
Tablets typically contain more builders and water-softening salts by weight, giving them a slight edge in very hard water areas. In extremely hard water, use tablets plus dishwasher salt.
Storage
Both must stay dry. Humidity will fuse tablets together and make pod film tacky. Store in a sealed container away from the sink.
How to Use Them Properly
1. Place in the main detergent dispenser, not the bottom of the machine — unless your manual says otherwise. Dropping it loose means it dissolves during the pre-rinse and washes away before the main cycle.
2. Do not unwrap the film. It's designed to dissolve.
3. Handle with dry hands. Wet fingers make pod film stick and tear.
4. Scrape, don't pre-rinse. Modern enzymes need some food soil to work on. Heavy pre-rinsing actually reduces cleaning performance.
5. Run hot water at the sink first so the dishwasher fills with hot water immediately.
6. Clean the filter monthly. A clogged filter ruins results no matter which detergent you use.
Troubleshooting Poor Results
White film on glasses: hard water. Add dishwasher salt and rinse aid, or switch to an all-in-one with glass protection.
Undissolved detergent in the dispenser: the dispenser door was blocked by a tall dish, or water temperature is too low.
Cloudy plastic: etching from over-hot cycles, or plastic simply holds residue. Place plastics on the top rack only.
Food still stuck: overloading. Dishes must not overlap; water spray needs clear paths.
What About Dishwashing Beads?
A newer format — dish washing beads or "dishwasher beads" — offers dose flexibility: scoop more for a heavily soiled load, less for a light one. They dissolve fast and avoid film waste. Jingliang produces dishwashing beads alongside pods and tablets for brands wanting a differentiated product.
Which Should You Buy?
- Choose pods if you run short cycles, want maximum convenience, or have moderately soft water.
- Choose tablets if you want the lowest cost per wash, live in a hard water area, or run long eco cycles.
- Choose beads if you want flexible dosing and reduced packaging.

FAQ
Can I cut a tablet in half? Yes for small loads, though multi-layer tablets may crumble. Beads are better for variable dosing.
Are pods safe for all dishwashers? Yes, all modern machines. Very old machines with short cycles may need tablets broken up or pods pre-placed.
Do I still need rinse aid with all-in-one? In hard water, yes — separate rinse aid still gives better drying.
Are they septic safe? Phosphate-free formulas are septic safe.
