Laundry pods: What is PVA Film?

The outer shell of every laundry pod is made of Polyvinyl Alcohol, or PVA. PVA is a watersoluble synthetic polymer. It is NOT the same as traditional plastic like polyethylene.

PVA is designed to dissolve completely in water. Its chemical structure is specifically engineered so that water molecules break its bonds. When you toss a pod in the wash, the film doesn't break into tiny plastic pieces; it dissolves at a molecular level into single molecules.

 Myth vs. Fact: Do Pods Create Microplastics?

Myth: PVA film is plastic and creates microplastic pollution in our oceans.

Fact: This claim comes from a misinterpretation of PVA. A 2021 study that went viral did not test laundry pods in a real wastewater treatment plant.

Here is what really happens: After the PVA dissolves in your washing machine, it goes to a municipal wastewater treatment plant. There, bacteria readily consume and biodegrade PVA. According to OECD 310D biodegradation tests conducted on the PVA film Jingliang uses, over 90% of PVA biodegrades into natural water and carbon dioxide within 28 days in the presence of microorganisms. It does not persist as microplastic.

The US EPA and FDA both list PVA as biodegradable and safe. The key is using highquality, coldwater soluble PVA, which is what we use. Cheap, lowgrade PVA may not dissolve fully.
